At Longsands, our aim is for every pupil to be a confident, fluent reader through a reading curriculum that consistently:
inspires curiosity through a range of texts, genres and authors
empowers children to feel confident when reading, exploring and discussing texts
provides a reading environment to collaboratively enjoy and explore texts
enables children to communicate their responses to texts both verbally and in writing
A high value is placed on reading in all areas of the curriculum. Our Reading Spine demonstrates how texts are selected to marry the teaching and enjoyment of books with opportunities to build cultural capital, broaden vocabulary and allow children to challenge and connect ideas.
Our reading offer supports pupils in becoming confident readers with the skills to access the curriculum and life-long opportunities for learning as well as a love of reading for enjoyment.
Through our reading curriculum, we provide many opportunities to teach reading, both formally and informally.
Our whole school Reading Spine identifies the range of books covered in each year group in a variety of contexts from the novels that inspire writing, non-fiction texts that support learning in Science and Foundation subjects and the focus authors and poets that build up across each academic year.
Every child from FS to Y6 has a daily reading lesson which provides an opportunity for younger pupils to apply their growing phonic knowledge in order to decode new words (see our Phonics curriculum) and for older pupils to develop their vocabulary and reading fluency. This is delivered through the Literacy Tree scheme which provides pupils with opportunties to explore and discuss a range of high quality texts to support their reading journey and inspire their writing.
Pupils are introduced to texts through shared, modelled, echo and choral reading before pupils practise their reading with a reading partner leading to independent reading of the text ahead of written comprehension.
At all stages of the process, new vocabulary is introduced, discussed and embedded through practised use.
For younger pupils, these texts are shared digitally with families at the end of the week and children are encouraged to re-read them to build fluency.
Every class enjoys dedicated story time which is a time for staff and pupils to simply pause and enjoy a story together. Many staff agree that this is their favourite part of the day and it models great reading habits to pupils.
We have a well stocked school library, supported by our PTFA. Children are encouraged to select books from the class and school libraries to enjoy both in school and at home.
Reading is also promoted and celebrated through local and national events including; The Brillant Book Awards (KS1), The Fantastic Book Awards (KS2), World Book Day and our half termly Wonder Days.
