At Longsands Community Primary School, we believe that RE both supports and strengthens what we aim to do in every aspect of school life. Our caring ethos and the value which we place on the development of the whole child; spiritually, morally, socially, culturally and intellectually is reflected in the RE curriculum. Our RE curriculum also supports us in promoting the British Values of Democracy, Rule of Law, Individual Liberty, Mutual Respect and Tolerance.
Longsands uses the ‘Lancashire Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education’. This is organised into specific teachings including: ‘shared human experience’, ‘beliefs and values’, ‘living religious traditions’ and ‘search for personal meaning’. We take an enquiry-based approach, with each unit of learning focusing on a key question. Children are encouraged to make connections between their own experiences and the beliefs, traditions and practises of a range of faiths.
Children will acquire and develop knowledge and understanding of the principle world faiths, many of which reflect our school and local community. These include Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism and Sikhism. These are revisited throughout the key stages, building and deepening pupils' understanding along with opportunities to visit places of worship and to enjoy visits from faith leaders within our community.
Longsands aims to develop positive attitudes towards other people regardless of gender, race or religion, thus helping children to be respectful of those in the community and beyond and to be responsible for fostering these attitudes in themselves and others.
Parents and Carers who wish to withdraw their child from Religious Education lessons are asked to contact the headteacher for a discussion.
