Phonics and Early Reading at Longsands

We recognise the crucial part that reading plays in our pupils' enjoyment of and engagement with learning at school and beyond.

At Longsands, our phonics and early reading programme develops the skills and attitudes required for our children to have a life-long love of reading.

We use the Essential Letters and Sounds phonic programme in Reception and KS1.

Daily phonics sessions follow a familiar and predictable pattern for pupils in order to build confidence in recognising the sounds within words and their written form, blending these sounds together to read words and segmenting them in order to spell.

Every session takes a recap, teach, practise, apply structure where previous sounds are recalled, new sounds taught and then practised and applied.

Children have further opportuntity to apply their growing phonic knowledge through shared and paired reading of books which align to the phonics teaching that week. These are sent home digitally each week for pupils to practise at home in order to develop fluency and automacity. This reading scheme is supplemented by additonal reading material from Oxford Owl.

Phonics teaching is complimented by individual and paired use of 'Tutoring with Lightning Squad' and 'Nessy' intervention programmes.
