Music at Longsands

At Longsands, children gain an understanding of what music is through listening, playing, composing and evaluating music of different styles and from different periods of history. We create an environment where children can express themselves through music whilst also recognising and accepting that people will have different preferences. We are committed to allowing children to listen to and participate in a range of styles of music, through recordings, videos and live performances.

Our curriculum allows all children to play an instrument and our extra-curricular provision allows children to develop this by playing a wider range of instruments, taught by specialist teachers. Singing is at the heart of our curriculum. Each unit of work is based around a song of different genres.

Through the music curriculum, we will develop children’s confidence by giving them opportunities to perform in a range of different situations, show them how mistakes are part of learning and teach them to be responsible for the school instruments.

Our wider curriculum encourages pupils to broaden their musical knowledge with a music spine that reflects the diverse culture of our school. Pupils also have opportuntities to perform through participation in local events such as Lancashire Sings and our termly Rocksteady concerts.
