History at Longsands

Our history curriculum aims to give pupils a coherent knowledge and understanding of local, national and world history and inspire pupils’ curiosity to know more about the past.

We aspire to develop pupils’ ability to confidently ask questions about the past, to learn how historians study it and give them the skills to carry out their own historical enquiries.

Through the subject, we aim to help children to recognise and understand the complexity of people’s lives and respect the diversity of societies, making links between periods of the past and their own lived experiences. At the core of our curriculum is chronological understanding; we aim to develop pupils’ understanding of the passing of time and make meaningful connections.

Our histpry curriculum introduces pupils to the substantive concepts of achievement, invasion and settlement, society, royalty, religion and government and the disciplinary concepts of chronology, cause and effect, similarity and difference, continuity and change, significance, evidence and interpretation.

History is brought to life through trips, visitors and significant events. Each year, cour pupils learn about significant events such as Remembrance Day and Black History Month in addition to their units of learning. This may form part of one of our whole school Wonder Day.

Many year groups will go on visits to historical sites or have visitors from workshops such as Delve into History.

Links are made with outdoor learning to enhance the children’s understanding.
