Art at Longsands

Our Art & Design curriculum inspires pupils to experiment and invent their own works of art.

Our spiral curriculum is designed to give pupils opportuntities to revisit and develop their skills, nurture their talent and interests, express their ideas and thoughts about the world, through learning about art and artists across cultures and history.

Our scheme supports pupils to meet the National curriculum end of key stage attainment targets and supports our pupils on their Artsmark journey, inspiring them to create, experience, and participate in great arts and culture.

We teach the skills required for the elements of art and give children the opportunity to explore different art mediums, showing them how resilience is part of learning and how to be responsible for school equipment and resources. Pupils are encouraged to evaluate their own and others' artwork, developing the vocabulary necessary to critique effectively.

Key skills are revisited with increasing complexity in a spiral curriculum model. This allows pupils to revise and build on their previous learning. Units in each year group are organised into four core areas:

● Drawing

● Painting and mixed-media

● Sculpture and 3D

● Craft and design

Pupils collate and explore ideas and techniques through the use of personal sketchbooks which become their own portfolio.
